Surface grinding wheels marked in full, with the max RPM on every blotter.

Surface grinding wheels for 6 x 12 and 6 x 18 grinders, plus deburring tools and flap discs for the bench. Shipped to shops across the United States from our Dawson Drive counter. Tell us the wheel marking off the old blotter and the spindle speed off the grinder plate. We come back with the match, a typical lead time and a price basis.

The rule that does not bend

The blotter says the speed. The spindle does not get a vote.

A vitrified wheel that lets go at 3,600 RPM goes through the guard. Every wheel we ship has its maximum operating speed printed on the paper blotter, and we check it against your spindle plate before we quote.

Two lines on this shelf

Wheels for the grinder, blades and discs for the edge.

Grinding is the last operation on a lot of hardened parts. The wheel has to match the steel and the finish, not whatever was on the rack.

07.1
Vitrified surface grinding wheels in a rack, one being ring-tested

Ring test before mounting. A clear ring is good. A dull thud means a crack, and the wheel goes in the scrap bin.

Surface grinding wheels

Vitrified wheels matched to steel, hardness and finish.

Most of what we sell goes on reciprocating surface grinders with a 7 or 8 inch wheel, 1/2 inch wide, on a 1-1/4 inch arbor. White aluminium oxide for hardened tool steel. Pink or ruby for when white glazes too fast. Seeded gel for D2, A2 and the high-vanadium grades that eat a plain wheel alive. Green silicon carbide for cast iron and non-ferrous work.

Order by the full marking, not by colour. Two white wheels can be an H and a K grade, and the K will burn a hardened block that the H grinds cool. If the old blotter is gone, tell us the steel, its hardness, how much you take per pass and the finish you need. We pick from that and say which marking we picked and why.

07.2
A swivel deburring blade taking the burr off a drilled aluminium plate

Deburring tools and flap discs

A swivel blade for the hole, a flap disc for the flame-cut edge.

The swivel handle takes replaceable high-speed steel blades on a 3.2 mm shank. One blade profile does most drilled holes and outside edges in aluminium and mild steel. A tighter hook profile gets into cross holes and the inside of a bore. Blades are sold in packs of ten because they dull, and a dull blade drags a burr instead of cutting it.

Flap discs are zirconia alumina on 4-1/2 inch backing with a 7/8 inch arbor, type 27 flat or type 29 conical. Start at 40 grit on weld and flame-cut plate. Go to 80 for blending. 120 is for a finish that gets painted.

Reading the blotter

32A46-H8VBE, one character group at a time.

Grinding wheel marking follows the same order on every maker's wheel. The first and last groups are the maker's own. The middle five are the standard.

32Maker's prefix for the abrasive type
AAluminium oxide abrasive. C would be silicon carbide
46Grit size. Lower is coarser and cuts faster
HGrade. A is softest, Z hardest. H is soft to medium
8Structure. Higher numbers are more open, run cooler

Grade is the one people get wrong

Grade is how hard the bond holds the grain. It is not how hard the abrasive is. A soft grade lets dull grains break out so fresh edges come through. That is what you want on hardened steel, where a hard grade glazes, rubs and burns. A harder grade holds its form longer on soft steel and narrow contact.

The failure we hear about most is a burnt surface on a hardened block, blue at the edges, and the wheel was a J or a K because it came with the machine. Drop two grades and dress it open. That usually fixes it before anyone orders anything.

The max RPM rule

Maximum RPM = maximum surface speed x 3.82 / wheel diameter in inches. A standard vitrified wheel rated at 6,500 surface feet per minute gives 3,547 RPM on a 7 inch wheel and 3,104 RPM on an 8 inch. Most 6 x 12 surface grinders turn around 3,450 RPM. So a 7 inch wheel is inside its rating, and an 8 inch wheel on the same spindle is not unless it carries a higher speed rating.

That is why we ask for the spindle speed off the plate. We will not quote a wheel whose rating sits under your spindle speed. Safety practice for mounting and running wheels is set out in ANSI B7.1, and your guard and flange condition matter as much as the wheel.

From old blotter to new wheel

What happens after you send the marking.

  1. You send the marking and the spindle speedPhoto of the old blotter, or the steel and hardness if it is gone. Add the RPM from the grinder plate and the wheel size.
  2. We match and check the ratingSame business day in most cases. We compare the wheel's maximum RPM to your spindle and flag it if it does not clear.
  3. You get a reply with the marking we choseFull marking, why that grade, a typical lead time and the price basis. By phone or email, your call.
  4. It ships packed on edgeVitrified wheels are packed so they cannot knock against each other. Ring-test it again when it arrives. Transit is rough.

Not on this shelf

No production quantities of CBN or diamond wheels for carbide and hardened HSS. We do not true or balance wheels on your hub either. Resin cut-off wheels for a chop saw we carry in the common sizes only, so ask before you plan on an odd one. Polishing compounds and buffs for show finishes belong with a finishing supplier.

For measuring what you just ground, the dial test indicators and gauge pins are on the next page over. Cutters for the operation before grinding are on carbide end mills and inserts.

Before you ask

Questions we get at the counter about wheels.

Can I run a wheel faster if my grinder spindle allows it?

No. The maximum RPM on the blotter is the ceiling for that wheel, whatever the spindle can do. If your spindle turns faster than the wheel rating, you need a different wheel or a smaller diameter.

Do you sell used or re-dressed wheels?

No. Every wheel ships new with its blotter intact. A wheel with a missing or torn blotter does not leave the building, even as a spare.

Do you sell grinding wheels for bench and pedestal grinders?

Yes, on inquiry, as long as you give the diameter, width, arbor hole and the grinder spindle speed from its plate. Bench grinders often need reducing bushings. We send the right ones with the wheel.

Who is this shelf not for?

Production centreless and cylindrical grinding shops running engineered wheels on a maker's contract. You already have a wheel rep and you should keep them. We serve toolrooms and job shops grinding plates, blocks and die parts on a surface grinder.
