ER32 collets

ER32 collets close 1 mm below nominal. Order the size on the shank, not the size you wish it was.

An ER32 collet marked 12 grips anything from 11 to 12 mm. Put a 1/2 in shank in it (12.7 mm) and it will not close, full stop. Put a 10 mm shank in a 12 and it will close, sort of, on the front lip only, and the tool walks out on the first heavy pass. We sell ER32 collets from 2 to 20 mm singly or as the 18-piece set in 1 mm steps, and every collet we ship has its nominal size and range printed on it. We will not ship one that does not.

Accuracy class matters more than the brand name on the box. DIN 6499 class 2 (commonly sold as "standard") allows 0.010 mm TIR at the nose and is fine for drills and roughers. Class 1, 0.005 mm, is worth it on small carbide end mills where runout goes straight into uneven flute load and early chipping. The class is stated on the quote. Inch-sized ER32 collets exist and we supply them, but check your nut: a sealed collet for through-coolant needs its own nut style.

CAT40 end mill holders

Side-lock end mill holders for Weldon-flat shanks and ER collet chucks, both on a CAT40 V-flange with a 7/24 taper. The holder is the cheap end of the spindle stack. A worn or fretted taper costs you surface finish on every tool it carries, and it quietly damages the spindle bore too.

We match two things before anything else: the pull-stud thread, which is 5/8-11 UNC on a CAT40 and M16 on a BT40, and the flange, because a BT holder in a CAT spindle will clamp and then chatter. Balance grade and rated RPM come from the maker. Where the maker specifies G2.5 at a stated speed, we give you both numbers. Where the maker does not, we do not invent one. Buy balanced holders if you run above about 12,000 RPM. Below that most shops cannot hear the difference.

Read the thread off the old pull stud before you order anything. It settles most arguments in one measurement.

TIR figures are typical for new holders in good condition. Your quote states the maker's own figure. Knob angle and length vary by machine builder; see the retention knob section.

From inquiry to spindle

Four steps, usually inside a week.

  1. Tell us the machine and the taper.Make, model and year if you have it. Or a photo of the old holder with the pull stud in, plus the stud's thread and overall length.
  2. We confirm flange, thread and knob.Same working day where the part is standard. Odd builders take longer and we tell you that up front.
  3. Quote by phone or email.Part number, maker's runout and balance figures, typical lead time, price per holder or collet.
  4. You confirm. It ships.Collets are checked at the receiving bench before they go back out. Typical door-to-door, 1 to 5 business days.

Questions at the counter

What buyers get wrong about holders.

Can I run a BT40 holder in my CAT40 machine?

No. Same taper angle, different flange and a metric pull-stud thread. The changer may even grab it. The tool will not locate properly and you will see it in the finish, or worse.

Do I need a new pull stud with a new holder?

If the old one has fretting on the neck or has been on and off more than a few times, yes. A retention knob is a fatigue part. We quote them together unless you tell us otherwise.

Why not buy the cheapest collet set online?

Go ahead, if it states its accuracy class. Many do not, and an unmarked collet that runs 0.03 mm out will chip a 3 mm end mill in minutes. We will not supply one without the class on the quote.

Who should look elsewhere?

Shops needing shrink-fit machines, presetters or hydraulic chucks with a service contract. That is a tooling-system sale and a specialist will serve you better. For cutters to put in these holders, see cutting tools.
